Aviation Rotorcraft Vibration Analysis Engineering Support

Under AMCOM Omnibus 2000 and EXPRESS Delivery Orders, Avion, Inc. provides engineering and specialized technical services for the AMCOM Aviation Engineering Directorate (AED), Aeromechanics Division for support of the Aviation Vibration Analyzer (AVA).  Avion has been a primary sub-contractor supporting the AVA program since 1998.  The AVA Program is a multifaceted effort designed to provide sustainment support for currently fielded systems, support for system enhancements, and support to new vibration analysis systems on Army aircraft (i.e., UH-60, UH-1, CH-47, MH-47, AH-64, AH-1, OH-58).  Avion has supported this program by providing field training, technical manual development and review, training material development and review, web site material development, and software integration.  Avion has also provided maintenance management system interface for the Vibration Management Enhancement Program (VMEP). Avion has developed and enhanced training manuals for the CH-47 aircraft. Through contract DAAH23-99-C-0213 Avion provided technical support and manual development for a CH-47 supplemental training guide and interactive technical manual. This manual integrated the process procedures for blade painting, static balance utilizing the Universal Static Balance Fixture (USBF), and rotor smoothing utilizing the AVA. Additionally, Avion has assisted the Aeromechanics Division in the revision, validation, and verification of the AVA TM 1-6625-724-13&P. Avion developed additional training materials for the use of the AVA equipment on various airframes. Avion has conducted worldwide AVA and USBF training at Army aviation units. Training encompasses basic vibration principals and AVA operation, advanced topics for each airframe, and on-aircraft demonstrations and troubleshooting. Training materials include the AVA basic training package and site-specific training materials. Avion has assisted the Aeromechanics Division by providing flight control rigging training in conjunction with training on the AVA.  Avion has revised, validated and verified the CH-47 rigging procedures in TM 55-1520-240-23. Avion provides highly specialized technical support at CONUS and OCONUS locations. Avion has also supported the development of the Aeromechanics Division web site.  This support included initial web site layout, development of web materials and web-based training.  Avion has also supported Aeromechanics at Army Aviation PM Users’ conferences with technical support and lessons learned information. Avion has developed presentation and briefing materials and coordinated efforts with Aeromechanics Division and Aviation Ground Support Equipment (AGSE) PM.

Significant Positive Impact: Avion has provided leadership in support of the Aeromechanics Division for improvements to the functionality and user interface for the AVA. Avion has supported the VMEP program and provided the Aeromechanics Division with recommendations for improvements to the aircraft script files in order to enhance the operation of the AVA. These recommendations have been accepted and incorporated. Avion has identified and documented issues within the AVA software. The resolution of these issues allows aviation units to reduce the time needed to return an aircraft to service. Avion has assisted in the validation of AVA software for the next version of Army Aviation Vibration Analysis Hardware /Software.
